Simple sentences are also known as 'independent clauses'.
C O M P O U N D S E N T E N C E S
A compound sentence has 2 independent clauses, joined together by one of the following words:
These words are called conjunctions. They are joining words.

A dog barked so a cat jumped into the tree.
The boy ran to the park but the girl walked to the shops.

Note: Be careful! Not all sentences that contain the word "and" are compound.

The following words will give you clues about how to identify a complex sentence. They are sentences that include a reason or give additional information about the subject.
Complex sentences usually have two ideas presented with a joining word. The two ideas are dependent on each other for meaning and would not stand alone as independent sentences without the other part. The joining word helps to create meaning in a complex sentence. These joining words are known as sub-ordinators.
