As a teenager, he went to live in a rural part of Mongolia because his father worked there.
1976 - He went back to China.
He studied Chinese literature and became a University teacher in 1984.
In 1988, Liu was teaching for a year in America, visiting different universities.
He heard there was protests in China against the government, so he quickly went back home.
There was a big march by students at a place called Tiananmen Square and Liu was speaking to the students there was going to be trouble. The army were on their way to attack the students. The day ended badly and many people were killed. Later, Liu was imprisoned until 1991 because you are not allowed to speak against the government in China.
After he was released, Liu continued to speak out and write about the Chinese government and ended up going back to prison several times.
He met his second wife, Liu Xia whom he married in 1996 and then they had a son.
In 2009, Liu arranged for many people to sign a petition against the government and they were furious. He was charged with crimes against the state and told to serve a sentence of 11 years at Jinshou Prison. Liu had been unable to present any evidence at his trail but said "I have no enemy and no hatred."
Later that year, when Liu was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, his wife went to collect it on his behalf. Then she was put under 'house arrest'. When somebody is under house arrest, they are monitored through the use of electronic devices and they do not have any way of communicating with other people.
