Men, moisturiser and the Dan Carter EffectFace scrub, moisturiser, eye cream, conditioner: for many guys, the ever-expanding men's section of the cosmetics aisle is a bewildering world.
Well, gentlemen, I have a handy hint for you, endorsed by actual research. Next time you're tempted by a toner, but scared it's too girly, ask yourself, "What would Dan do?" Katie Douglas and Dr Lisa McNeill, of the University of Otago marketing department talked to a bunch of guys about grooming. They found men most often used All Blacks, particularly Carter, to justify their purchasing decisions. If an All Black does it, it's automatically "masculine and acceptable", the guys said. (How do they know a particular All Black tones and moisturises? Well, McNeill tells me, often guys' wives and girlfriends will talk their man into a purchase by saying, 'Of course [favourite AB] uses it, you can tell by how smooth his skin is'.) McNeill told me Richie McCaw's name cropped up a lot and there was much conversation about bearded and eyeliner-ed ABs. Even Colin Meads and Grizz Wylie were mentioned, as examples of older generations' attitudes to grooming. But one All Black took the cosmetics cake. Dan, stand up and take a baby-faced bow. One guy summed up Dan's influence thusly: "You still come back to saying, 'Well, Dan Carter looks like that, and he's rugged, because he plays rugby, so it's OK for other people to do that'." Rugged? Dan? Riiight... (click the STUFF.CO.NZ link to the left for the full article) |

Dan Carter's Flawed Frame Behind InjuriesDUBLIN: Dan Carter's bio-mechanical frailties explain why he has turned into world rugby's most injured man says All Blacks coach Steve Hansen. The world class fly-half, who is embarking on a sixth-month break from rugby, completed a stuttering 2013 season in appropriate style when he limped off early in his 100th Test. The Achilles pain that forced him off in the 26th minute of their 30-22 win over England adds to a catalogue of woe since collapsing in agony with a groin tear midway through the 2011 World Cup. Four different injuries in the last year alone can be partly blamed on the 31-year-old's unusual body setup, Hansen says. "Bio-mechanically he hasn't got a great body. I don't know if you've looked at his gait, but it's an ugly gait," Hansen said. "It hasn't stopped him from being able to run fast and do all those things, but it puts pressure on joints and ligaments.
